Get Started

Start a Little STEM Library

It takes about a weekend, a few tools, and a love of science. Here's everything you need to know.

Five Steps to Your First Library

  1. Find a Location & Steward

Choose a spot with high foot traffic — a park entrance, school courtyard, community garden, or neighborhood corner. Confirm you have permission from the property owner or municipality. Identify at least one steward (that's you!) who will keep the library stocked and maintained.

  2. Build, Buy, or Borrow a Box

Build your own using our free plans (any weather-proof design works), find a local makerspace or carpenter to build one, or purchase a ready-made unit from our shop. Boxes should be weatherproof, mounted on a post or wall, and clearly labeled.

  3. Register & Get Chartered

Purchase an official Little STEM Library charter sign. This gives you an official charter number, adds your library to our world map, and grants you access to our steward resources, book donation programs, and community network.

  4. Fill It with STEM Books

Start with 20–40 books spanning science, technology, engineering, math, and nature. Use our recommended book lists by age group. Reach out to publishers, local bookstores, and schools for donations. We also run a Book Seeding program for new stewards.

  5. Celebrate & Spread the Word

Host a grand opening! Invite neighbors, local media, and the school principal. Post on social media with #LittleSTEMLibrary. Connect with nearby stewards through our app. The more people who know, the more books flow in and out.

Anything STEM! Science picture books for young children, nature guides, coding workbooks, math puzzle books, engineering biographies, chemistry textbooks, robotics manuals, and more. See our STEM Resources page for curated lists by age group. The more diverse the collection, the more readers you'll attract.

Most stewards find that the community naturally donates books once a library is established. You can also request donations at schools, libraries, local businesses, and science departments at nearby universities. Our publisher partner program gives stewards access to discounted and donated STEM titles throughout the year.

Absolutely! Schools, libraries, science museums, tech companies, makerspaces, and community organizations are among our most active stewards. We have a Network Stewardship program for organizations that want to maintain multiple libraries. Contact us for details.
